Kaitlyn’s Memory Will Go On

My daughter was an artist and she drew this self-portrait when she was around 17 or 18 in high school. When Kaitlyn took her life, the deans and the students of Wake Forest School of Medicine, where she had started her 3rd year of medical school, decided to create an ongoing fund in Kaitlyn’s name in their Wellness Center for students that are having problems of depression, or any kind of mental illness, so they can get the help they need. They have also hired another psychologist for the center for this purpose and they are taking great steps to make sure students are aware that there is help for them at the school.

The Deans at the school requested that I let them take the portrait and make a full sized print of this large drawing and they will hang it up in the Wellness Center where it will remain forever more. I am proud that it will be hanging there but I hate the reason it’s there is because she took her own life. But, I’m proud because even after her death, she is helping people that have the same problem she had but for some reason could not come forth to get help. I’m hoping that the picture of a fellow student that took their own life will bring home the reality of how serious depression is and seek help if they need it.

It will be picked up tomorrow by a fellow classmate and brought back to us soon. Please pray for its safe return. I am so proud of Kaitlyn’s work. I’m so proud of her and everything she has done in her life.

I love you Kaitlyn.

About gatito2

My name is Rhonda. I'm a registered nurse, for the last 20 years, that has not been able to work since the day I learned of my daughter's death by suicide 4-12-13. (She actually died 4-11-13 and her body was not found until the 12th) Me and my husband have been married for 32 years and he's a wonderful man. We grieve in different ways. He works, I write. This is my journey through this horrible land of losing a child..

  1. I told my Mum to take a look at your blog and we were both moved by your posts. We wish you peace and recovery. I just hope that if one of my friends felt low that I would notice and help somehow. The drawing is beautiful.
With best wishes and happy memories,
    Charlotte

Thank you so much Charlotte. You are very kind. Just remember though, there are people that don’t show any signs whatsoever because they hide them very well. My daughter’s closest friends had no clue.

your post moved me to tears, i want to share with you, but have no idea if it would hurt or help and the last thing i would ever want to do is, harm . I just want to tell you now, that I wish you peace today ,this evening, someday soon. Sometimes, that’s all we need.

Please share with me. I don’t think anything said in a compassionate way will hurt me. I’d like to hear it. If you don’t want to post publicly, email me at welding81@intrstar.net (note the different spelling of intrstar). Thank you so much for your kind words.
